Description
Within the hedonistic world of early 1930's Weimar Berlin the impoverished English author Christopher Isherwood observes and plans to complete his masterpiece. Within his bohemian bedsit he passively interacts with a series of individuals who act as inspiration for his book; his busty, interfering landlady Fraulein Schneider, the 'gold digging' gigolo Fritz, Natalia Landauer the wealthy Jewish daughter of a Berlin department store owner and the rich but jaded, American playboy Clive. Finally, though, Christopher meets his muse- the decadent, consciously shocking yet forever childish Sally Bowles. Like a whirl-wind this irrepressibly English 'icon of camp' crashes into his life... and things will never be the same again...
Yet above this society, dancing upon the brink a storm, a maelstrom is about to break. As the characters live, drink and love the thunderous cloud of Nazism gathers overhead.
Adapted from Christopher Isherwood's semi autobiographical 'Berlin Stories/Goodbye To Berlin' the play captures a humorous, lively yet at times poignant slice of historical life in a time now long since wiped away forever.
This production is presented by arrangement with
Josef Weinberger Ltd.
